December was another intense month in the world of SEO – there was no let-up from Google over the Christmas period!

December marked the first birthday of the Google Search Central site, the place where Google places all of its research documentation with the Google SEO team now collaborating on this project.

There were an additional two major updates to the ranking algorithms in December – with Google ending the year as it started it. The November 2021 Core Update rolled over into December- as usual, we don’t know much detail about it, apart from the fact that is a classic base core update affecting core systems and that can lead to changes in performance in Search and Discover.

The second ranking-related update in December was the Product Reviews Update aimed at promoting higher quality product reviews – including a series of best practices and specific indications.

Google also announced that the shift to their mobile-first index was still ongoing due to various problems on a small number of sites, and so they have decided not to announce a final date for when this will happen – instead saying they will inform sites “as needed”.
