So, what’s new in Search in April 2023? The headlines include a new search engine, a new Reviews update from Google, and more information added to eCommerce site search results. Read on to find out more:

Google News

  • This month’s big news is that Google is working on a “new” search engine – in response to the potential threat posed by chatbots such as ChatGPTGoogle’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, has recently said Google is “testing several new search products, such as versions that allow users to ask follow-up questions to their original queries.” One to keep an eye on definitely, although it seems fair to say that search will always exist as people will always want to search for information – but how they do this may change.
  • April also saw Google release their Reviews update, which went further than their previous product review updates. This update covered reviews of any reviewable topic, including businesses, services, destinations and media (including games and films). This change meant that anything that the guidance they had previously released about what they considered to be a high-quality product review now applies to any review. So any website that publishes any review content may see fluctuations in rankings.
  • This month’s important news for eCommerce sites from Google – they are now showing shipping and return information in Search results in the US (but it will roll out to more countries shortly). Google has also added a report in Search Console to help SEOs monitor and fix the structured data required to enable Google to show this information.

Bing News

  • Bing is already streets ahead of Google when it comes to incorporating AI features into search, and last month (April) saw the introduction of its SwiftKey keyboard with GPT AI smarts. This updated keyboard has three new features: Search, Chat and Tone. Search lets you quickly search the web from your keyboard without switching apps, Chat enables you to access the new Bing for more detailed queries, and Tone helps you communicate more effectively by using AI to customise your in-progress text.

AI News

  • April saw Databricks, the data warehouse and data lake company, release the first open-source instruction-following large language model (LLM) fine-tuned on a human data set for commercial use – Dolly 2.0. This is huge news as it could see the launch of many competitors to ChatGPT as businesses can create and launch their LLM without the need to share data with third parties or pay for API access.

Social Media News

  • Instagram finally launched one of its most requested feature updates in April – users now can add not one but up to five links in their bio, helping creators to drive more traffic.
