I have a friend, a very highly respected and successful businessman, who once said to me, “you never regret the things you try, you only regret the things you don’t”. Now, forgive me if this seems a little philosophical, but when I consider this in relation to growing your business, it really is a critical thought. Many opportunities pass your way or come out of nowhere in business, and you have to make a judgement call on them.

Be brave. Think outside the box

As a business owner, marketing manager, or whatever, you can probably think of a time you have done this yourself.

You consider the pro’s and con’s; you pay due diligence to ensure it fits within your business model and that its useful for your customers, and then it usually comes back to one thing, cost. How much am I going to have to pay to see the benefits? Will the return on my investment make the venture worthwhile? This is obviously the right thing to do, my friend will also take this journey, as do I, but there is one question we rarely ask. Well, certainly not out loud for fear of looking incompetent, stupid even. This is a question that is formed in the part of your brain that controls your rational thinking, and is probably the most critical question we should ask ourselves and others, “do I understand?”. There you go, I did it. It takes a certain level of confidence to admit you don’t understand something. We all have a conflicting part of our brain, whose sole purpose is protecting us from looking exposing our weakness. This is your emotional reaction, and it’s powerful. It is this emotion that can cloud our judgement and result in us making a choice that goes entirely against all the due diligence work we put in, and that tells us to take the easy option. But how can we silence this part of the brain to look at the hard facts? The numbers, the confidence to say, go for it. Just say it, just ask the question, and with a little help you will understand. You won’t be looked down upon for having a hunger for knowledge, quite the contrary; you will be the confident one as you will be learning something new. You will be able to silence that emotion and make a rational, fully informed decision, clear of the fog that the emotional shield was creating.

Embrace the Digital Marketing World

This leads me to my point. In the world of Digital Marketing, we come across two types of people on a day-to-day basis. Those who embrace the digital world and those who don’t. Now those who do are enjoying the benefits. Think of a famous brand, any famous brand and then find them on Google. I bet you found them straight away, right? You don’t see the big companies of this world shying away from having a high-quality website, using SEO, PPC and regular fresh content releases to promote themselves. I bet you also found their Social Media pages too. They embrace the digital world, and they understand the benefits of doing so to their brand. Yes, they all probably have large marketing departments and big budgets, but this is not essential. All you need to do as a smaller company is to ask the question. As Digital Marketers, we understand this and, it is our job to educate, guide and help you to compete in the digital world. It doesn’t cost the earth to run a successful digital marketing campaign as long as you embrace the concept and deliver consistently; you will reap the rewards. You can be one of those names you searched for earlier because your brand will develop; it will have the chance to flourish. So next time you decide ” the internet doesn’t really work for us”, ask yourself the question ” do I fully understand and is this the reason that I am missing an opportunity?”.

Grasp that opportunity and enjoy the rewards it brings and ultimately, don’t have regrets.

If you can see this in yourself, give us a call at Zool, we are happy to help and always keep things simple.
