May was a busy month in the world of SEO, as Google held their annual I/O conference, where they talked about their new product releases and lots of other interesting stuff.  Here is an overview of some of the things they talked about:

MUM (their new language model)

Google introduced their new language model MUM (which stands for Multitask United Model) as their next step in understanding natural language more. This model is 1000 times more powerful than BERT (which they introduced in 2019). The idea behind MUM is that it doesn’t just read text, but it also understands the meaning behind it and then forms a deep knowledge about the topic involved. It then uses this knowledge to create multi-layered content to answer complex questions. But what does this mean for SEO? Well it looks like Google is trying to move away from ranking the best page for a certain key phrase and instead wants to offer searchers a tailored solution to their search based on pieces of relevant information across different pages in different formats. So, we need to start thinking about helping you to create more content focusing on solving your customer problems rather than just trying to compete for one keyword you want to rank for. We will cover this in more detail on our blog.

An increase in detecting spam

In their latest Webspam report, Google indicated that they had detected 60% more spam since 2019, with AI helping to revolutionise their approach to detecting spam and removing it from the SERPs. From an SEO point of view, this is really interesting as a lot of webspam are SEO-related as some people try and produce lots of low-quality links and large networks of sites offering auto-generated content – which is really bad practice. Hackers are also trying to hack websites so they can inject links back to their own content and networks. There is nothing to worry about for you here as long as your site is safe and secure – which it will be as you are one of our clients, and we ensure your hosting is reliable and your plugins and themes are updated regularly.

Image Optimisation

John Mueller from Google tweeted an interesting reminder on image optimisation. He said not only do we need to upload images in an optimal format and the right size, but also redirect the image URL when it is changed to another one.
