September was a busy month in the world of SEO, as there was a major Google algorithm update – which is always a big deal.

Google News

  • Google’s Helpful Content update continued to roll out. We have been talking about this update for the past couple of months. Google said it would overhaul how it treated helpful or unhelpful content, so sites built to trick Google into giving them good SEO results shouldn’t be ranking well now. On the other hand, sites with content that is helpful to their readers should be rewarded. However, research by the SEO industry seems to show that not much has changed, but it is something to keep an eye on going forward. As always, we will follow Google’s guidelines for helpful content on all our client’s sites.
  • Google’s September Core Update. Google also released a September Core Update which aimed to reward high-quality content similar to the “Helpful Content Update”. This update mainly impacted news publishing and review sites – some lost up to 40% of their traffic. Going forward, publishers will have to specialise in their content rather than being broad and generalist.
  • Google also released a Product Reviews update. Google also updated a lot of its product structured data focusing on products and product reviews. New features were added to Google Search Console (GSC), highlighting clients’ eligibility for a merchant’s listing (free shopping listings in Google).
  • Google Flights had a big update based on sustainability. You can now select eco-certified flights. This indicates that Google is focusing more on sustainability and social responsibility. This could become a competitive advantage in the future.

Social Media News

  • TikTok is influencing other social media platforms. TikTok seems to be taking over everything, causing other social media platforms to panic and change to be more like them – especially regarding short-form videos. It will be interesting to see if this is just a short-term thing or whether people will get used to searching, learning and researching like this now.

Other Tech News

  • Shopify is making handling logistics and shipping costs easier, which other eCommerce platforms aren’t (yet). You can tell them you want to market your product in 20 different languages and currencies by drop-shipping on demand, stored in local distribution centres,” and you won’t have to manage any of that. This is good news for smaller manufacturers and sellers as it will allow them to compete with Amazon on a more balanced scale.
