Google News

  • The biggest news in SEO for September was the two-week helpful content update that Google rolled out. It has changed its algorithm by loosening the guidelines on machine-generated content, indicating a shift in how it evaluates and ranks content that AI generates. The wording in Google’s search documentation changed from “helpful content written by people, for people, in search results” to “helpful content created for people in search results.”
  • Google has also made updates to Bard. They have introduced a “Google it” button to Bard, which can help you evaluate statements by clicking on highlighted phrases to learn more about supporting or contradicting information found online.
  • As well as updating Bard, Google released their Gemini product, a new LLM (Language Learning Model) to compete with OpenAI. The fusion of Deep Mind and Google resources will make the impact of Gemini potentially immense. Select companies already have access to Gemini, which may indicate that it will be released shortly.
  • Google is still playing around with how they want the Search Engine Results pages to look, with the recent removal of several rich results, including indented search results, how-to’s and FAQ’s. How-to and indented search results are removed entirely, with FAQs still being shown for “well-known, authoritative government and health sites”.

Bing News

  • Google is one of many who have been busy this month; Bing has also been making plenty of updates, but it has still failed to grow its market share against Google in over six months.
  • Microsoft also announced that it will retire the disavow links feature in October 2023, believing its advanced AI can automatically handle unwanted links without manual disavowal. They want websites to focus on high-quality content and natural link acquisition to improve their visibility in Bing search results.
  •  Bing Webmaster has also launched an enhanced Performance Report, offering valuable insights similar to Google Search Console. Bing’s stats now also include data from Bing Chat, although there isn’t a way to filter Chat data now.

AI news

  • OpenAI has released the third version of its generative AI platform, DALL-E. The latest version introduces new features and enhancements to improve its generative capabilities. DALL-E now has the potential to transform various industries with its powerful visual AI technology.

Social News

  • TikTok and Google are testing a partnership to enhance search results, with experts saying this move could boost traffic and ad revenue for both companies.
